Welcome to the campaign website for the UNISON coalition of Devon branches dealing with Local Government Reorganisation (LGR). Here you will find all the resources and information you need to know from your union relating to proposals to introduce new unitary arrangements in the county.

UNISON represents the interests of more than 25,000 staff working for county and district councils across Devon, including front-line staff and managers responsible for the delivery of a range of public services.

We will build this resource over time, so please sign up to our e-bulletin for updates and developments. If you are a member working in Devon local government, bookmark this page in your Favourites.

Clear, factual communication will become a more and more important commodity as we move closer to a decision. We also intend to use this site as part of our member consultation on key issues as they arise.

The campaign

The Boundary Committee's recommendation for the future shape of local government in Devon is imminent. The Government are expected to make a final decision, subject to any judicial reviews, later this year. UNISON is well placed to respond to any decision and to act in the interests of our members.

In Devon there is a separate UNISON Branch for each local government employer. These nine branches meet on a regular basis to protect and improve the interests of all their members and quality public services. UNISON branches have remained focused on the possible outcomes from Devon LGR rather than getting drawn into partisan politics. We are pursuing:

  1. fair treatment for staff;
  2. no reduction in the quality of publicly provided services for the people of Devon; and
  3. local democratic control over decisions relating to delivery of services that affect local people.

UNISON branches have initiated a dialogue with Devon Local Authorities so as to ensure we are well placed to sort out the inevitable employment and staffing issues should unitary local government come to Devon.

Even if the final decision is to leave things as they are in terms of structure and governance, it is recognised that there will be closer working relationships between Authorities. This is a process that UNISON will be fully engaged in to ensure that changes benefit our members and our communities.

UNISON branches have also launched a campaign to engage with our members and build the union to strengthen our negotiating hand over the coming period of uncertainty and change.
